Team Development
We enjoy working with teams. This page will introduce some of the approaches that we use to make team development meaningful and memorable.
Experiential Learning
The People Developers often adopt the experiential learning approach and use a variety of practical, meaningful and fun outdoor and indoor learning activities when facilitating or supporting development events. Even the best planned development events can flag after long periods of time indoors, so an opportunity for people to take in some fresh air thinking is always welcome.
Fresh Air Thinking
Our 'Fresh Air Thinking' approach is based around problem solving activities that take place outdoors. These do not need a high level of fitness - more a can do attitude! People work in small teams and are supported through activities by a facilitator who conducts a short review on completion. At the end of all the activities, teams are encouraged to reflect on their experiences and then relate them back to the theme of the main development event.
Solvitas Perambulum - Walk and Talk
The Romans coined the phrase ‘solvitas perambulum’, which means ‘solve it as you walk’. They believed that the combination of fresh air, removing themselves physically from the source of a problem, light physical exercise and creative inspiration from nature worked wonders if they needed to sort through issues in their minds. The state in which ones imagination is able to run free is ideal for solving problems. By giving peoples brains a rest from repeatedly raking over every aspect of a problem, they will find that they are more likely to come up with a solution. The People Developers regularly use the Walk and Talk (Solvitas Perambulum) approach with many of its programmes.
“The results of our first team development event perfectly matched our objectives. It was a huge success and our staff are now converted to the Fresh Air Thinking approach. CHAS would confidently use the same approach at future training events.”
Moira Dunworth, Head of Education, CHAS
Personality Profile Tests and Team Roles Profiling
We can supplement team development events by using the highly respected Belbin Team Roles Self-Perception Inventory, The Emotional Intelligence Team Effectiveness Model or the Myers Briggs Type Indicator for participants to obtain a greater understanding of their colleagues.
At the end of the day, the most important aspect of providing a team development event is that clients are happy with the planned outcomes and subsequent results. By working in partnership with clients to achieve positive change and to realise the full potential of a team, we can revisit the team on their return to work. This support option is often the best approach to maintain the momentum achieved from a team development intervention.
